From Kraków, it is about one hour to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration camp during the Nazi regime. We decided on a half-day guided tour, as getting there by public transport is somewhat complicated. We visited both Auschwitz I (the original camp) and Auschwitz II (Birkenau).
Poland surprised us; we spent two days in both Warsaw and Kraków, and found both to be way more modern than we initially thought. Both cities, although lacking a proper skyline, are very colorful yet very different. Both centers are very walkable, and therefore best explored on foot.

While Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian cuisines certainly have their own unique dishes, many of the specialties can be found in all of the Baltic countries. In general we were not too satisfied with Baltic foods, still we definitely discovered some great tasting meals, drinks, and snacks.

Vilnius is a bigger, less dense city then Tallinn and Riga. Still, the best way to see the old part of Vilnius is by doing a walking tour. We started ours at the steps of the City Hall, from where we walked to Vokiečių gatvė to learn more about the history of Vilnius.

After crossing the border with Estonia, the first sight we visited in Latvia were the sandy cliffs of Sietiņiezis in Nationalpark Gauja. It is a beautiful short 30-minute hike along the edges of the forest to the cliffs. From there, we went to the quaint medieval town of Cēsis, where we heard the tale of the guardian of the town and the significant role he played in protecting the town. After getting back on the sightseeing shuttle, we continued on to Riga.
