Top Foods from Ecuador

The more you travel in South America, the more similarities you are going to notice between cuisines. Some dishes, like the mixed rice, the potato chicken or pork combos, empanadas, and salchipapas are also a favorite in Peru and Bolivia. One unusual meat that we tried was the guinea pig, or cuy. Although it was available and marketed in Cusco as well, it is more common in Ecuador. In Baños we were able to buy a quarter of guinea pig for only 3$ instead of 20$ in most other places.

Swinging Baños

Baños de Agua Santa, or simply Baños, is a popular tourist town about three hours south of Quito. As it is situated in the mountains close to the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest, it is the place to go in Ecuador for adventurous activities. We mainly went there for one activity: the “Swing at the End of the World,” which is a swing located on a mountain edge next to a steep hill.

Wildlife on the Galápagos

The Galápagos Islands is unique destination which should be on every travelers’ list. It comes with a price, however, as everything on the island is quite expensive: it starts by paying 120$ in National Park fees before you even set foot on solid ground. On top of that, lodging and groceries are overpriced, and tours around the Galápagos start at 150$.

Top Foods from Peru

  • Peru

The first dish that comes to mind when visiting Peru is ceviche. Due to its location near the water, Lima seemed like the best place to try it and it certainly delivered. However, the Peruvian cuisine had so much more gastronomic choices to offer; anything from the decadent Alpaca Medallion in Rosemary Sauce to the less exotic Pollo A La Brasa and Lomo Saltado, not only tasted delicious, but also were presented well.

Old and New Lima

Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru. Not surprisingly, it consists of many neighborhoods all with their own character. We stayed three days in Miraflores, an up-scale neighborhood thirty minutes south of downtown Lima.
