Walking down the aisles of any wine store, you will most likely find a sizable selection of South African wines. South Africa produces some of the most amazing and affordable wines, with the two most renowned areas being Stellenbosch and Franschoek. Only a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, the alluring landscape combined with boutique hotels and endless picture-perfect wineries can easily fill up an entire week of wine tastings.
Victoria Falls, situated on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, is neither the highest or widest waterfall in the world, but it is the worlds’ largest in total surface. We spent the morning enjoying breathtaking views from the Zimbabwean side, before walking across the Victoria Falls Bridge to Zambia to inspect the falls from close by.
The South African cuisine draws from indigenous, Malay, Indian, Dutch, and French influences making for an interesting array of dishes. We found that Cape Town is definitely the best place for culinary explorations, as the Kruger National Park has limited options. The Cape Winelands District in particular offered quite an amazing and surprisingly affordable variety of gourmet options.
The Kruger National Park in northeastern South Africa is one of the largest game reserves on earth. Over a million visitors tour the almost 20,000 square kilometers each year, in search of the Big Five. We spent two days exploring the southernmost part of the park by car, while also joining a night game drive to get the most out of our first wildlife exploration trip.

Cape Town, the largest city of South Africa, is a great destination as there is plenty to see in the city itself, as well as in the immediate surroundings. From exploring its colorful neighborhoods of Bo Kaap or Camps Bay, to taking the ferry to historic Robben Island, to venturing out towards the southwesternmost point of Africa at Cape of Good Hope: three days in Cape Town is barely enough.
We, Mark & Herta, are currently backpacking through Europe, and eventually planning to settle in London. Beyond that? The possibilities are endless.
