The Amazon rainforest covers about 40% of South America, so a trip to the continent is not complete without visiting the Amazon. The majority of the rainforest (60%) lies within Brazil, yet we opted for a two-day visit of the Amazon while in Bolivia because we found it to be more economical and more remote.
We arrived in La Paz after enduring a 10-hour overnight bus ride from Uyuni. The city of La Paz is mainly known for its extremes: it is located at 3,650m above sea-level, and it is home to the “World’s Most Dangerous Road.” It was exactly that road we would conquer on a bicycle.
From San Pedro, the best way to cross into Bolivia is by going on a 3-day tour to Salar de Uyuni and continuing to La Paz onwards.
