In April 2015, we visited five countries: Colombia, United States, Canada, Fiji, and Australia. Two weeks ago we summarized Colombia, and now it is time for the remainder of the month. After Colombia, we visited the Pacific Northwest, before spending an unexpected day in Fiji. We settled down in Melbourne, but not after we briefly visited Sydney.
Against our tradition, we will not wait until the end of the month to summarize expenses. As we are leaving South America behind, it is time to wrap up the finances and move on to the next chapter.
Colombians aren’t very keen on vegetables as most main courses consist of lots of meats, beans, and plantains, often fried. However, fresh fruits and fruit smoothies also are very versatile and plentiful. Colombians like to mix two polar flavors together making for some exciting combinations such as the areas ice cream with casquitos jelly and the hot chocolate with cheese.
Our final stop of our journey through South America was Cartagena, in the Caribbean region of Colombia. We spent four days in this city, characterized by its colonial architecture as it once was an important city for the Spanish invaders. The narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings with balconies, and many small squares make it a charming and walkable city.
Just like in Asia, we used a variety of transportation methods to get us across South America. Where in Asia we relied mostly on buses and trains, in South America we mostly used flights and buses as the rail network is almost nonexistent. Also, because the countries we visited in South America are a bit further away from each other, we often opted to skip 24+hr bus rides and just take a short flight instead. This made the trip a little bit more expensive, but way more comfortable.
We, Mark & Herta, are currently backpacking through Europe, and eventually planning to settle in London. Beyond that? The possibilities are endless.
